Sunken Kitchen extension
This is an exciting house extension project in Douglas, Cork. We have a great contractor in Brian Twomey Construction, a passive house experienced contractor. We are extending a brick faced building, and so we have gone with a timber-frame structure, because wide cavity masonry is not compatible with brick cladding in this micro-climate.
The design strikes a diagonal generating circulation route from the front door, deep in the existing plan, to the new terminal point of the sunken kitchen extension window, which because of topography is at ground level externally.
The stepped garden terraces absorb the conflicting geometries and use the positive external patio space to interlock the dwelling and garden.
